In Alto do Castro, there is a visual domain of the entire agricultural valley of Covas do Barroso. The parish, the fourth largest in the county, occupying a total area of 29.6 km2, consists of Covas do Barroso, the parish’s headquarters, Romainho and Muro. The three villages are located in the valley, protected to the north by Serra da Sombra and to the south by Serra do Pinheiro.

It is because of its geographical location, surrounded by mountains, that its toponym comes from, because when sighted in the distance, it looks like a pit (Cova in Portuguese).

At Alto do Castro, one can find a set of rocks, where traces of a castle were discovered.

The viewpoint is part of the GIAHS Observatory Network.

The Olhar do Guerreiro (Eye of the Warrior) Viewpoint is part of the GIAHS Observatory Network – Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, implemented in the Barroso region in the municipalities of Boticas and Montalegre.

Alto do Castro is located in the municipality of Boticas, 16.8 km (25 minutes by car) from the county seat via R311 (towards Salto) and M519 (towards Aldeia de Campos). When you arrive at the marked dirt road, leave the car where it is convenient and follow the remaining 500 meters on foot.
