The castle of Montalegre is a relatively late medieval military structure, classified as a National Monument. It is part of the movement of “reorganization of the border areas east and west of Chaves”, undertaken by D. Afonso III (GOMES, 1993, p.183), an initiative that aimed to provide the northern  border of Trás-os-Montes with an effective territorial order and legal, dependent on the royal authority, but whose results fell short of expectations.
