5 places you can not miss in Boticas

Making quiet visits or following more challenging routes, Boticas makes possible all the experiences, in a unique rural environment, that still remains pure and unrelated to the routine confusion of the great urban centers.

The 5 places you can not miss are a selection of Visit Boticas.

Boticas Parque

Boticas Parque is one of the most visited places in the county and ideal for family programs. It associates biodiversity and nature with knowledge and leisure, presenting itself as an important active nucleus in the promotion of conservation and preservation of the environment, in close articulation with the community.

Know some of the activities here.

House Museum Quinta do Cruzeiro

The Quinta do Cruzeiro house, also known as Casa dos Silvas – the name of the family that lived here for several generations – was once part of a larger agrarian structure, composed of dispersed “casais” (rural property), who served to support the owners and staff.

The house includes a wine cellar, a alembic, a warehouse of implements, a storehouse of oil and wine, a storehouse or a meat pantry, a potato storehouse, a pig’s corral house, a donkey’s corral house, a chicken and rabbit yard, The “tulhão” –  complex of the floor, canastros and storage building and accommodation of temporary workers -, a mill and olive oil press.

There is also a hydraulic mill for sawing wood, a flax mill and a small booth to produce electricity by taking advantage of the movement of the water.

Nadir Afonso Arts Center

Inaugurated in 2013, the Nadir Afonso Arts Center is the result of a partnership between the Boticas Town Hall and the Nadir Afonso Foundation.

The partnership between the two entities allows the “botiquenses”, in particular, and all visitors to Boticas, in general, to enjoy part of the estate of the painter’s family and also part of the Foundation’s collection.

Church of Santa Maria of Covas do barroso

The church of Santa Maria de Covas is the most outstanding example of the religious architecture of the Romanesque-Gothic style of the Barroso region, dating back to the 14th century.

With an austere exterior, powerful granite faces, and a beautifully decorated chandelier, the church of Santa Maria de Covas has a stunning murals decoration and the tomb with a statue of Afonso Anes de Barroso dating from 1459.

Terva Valley Archaeological Park

Observation platform in the Hill-fort of Sapelos (castro).

With about 60km2 and 47 archaeological sites identified, the TVAP justifies several visits to Boticas. If you do not have time for more, we’ll give you two suggestions. The Hill-fort of Sapelos, one of the most impressive fortified settlements of the county, from where it benefits from a breathtaking view over the Upper Valley of the Terva River. And the Mines of Limarinho, where the cuts and lagoons, resulting from the Roman mining, are the most remarkable landscape expression of the ancient mining of the Terva Valley.

The Interpretive Center, located in the village of Bobadela, is the entrance to the TVAP – the exhibition contents make the bridge to the landscape and heritage in loco, proposed through visitation routes.
