The village of Sapiãos was established on the foothill of the Leiranco Mountain southern slope fixating the ancient connection between Chaves and Braga through the inner part of the Minho region, via Beça and Cabeçeiras de Basto, on a strategic site equally serving the current connection with Montalegre. The village maintains its rural surroundings that include elds and woodlands bounded to the agro-forest-pastoral economy dominating the region for a long period of time.
The traditional houses are of granite; they are distributed throughout a slope in narrow and sinuous streets still preserving their medieval morphology and shaped by the crossing of an ancient transport connection.
From the medieval period are the anthropomorphic graves located at the Pássaros site and the late Romanesque chapel located on the village cemetery.
